Oscar First for an Iranian and a French Man

“Nader and Simin, A Separation,” a domestic drama directed by Asghar Farhadi, became the first Iranian movie to win the Oscar for best foreign language film at the 84th ceremony.

Already the winner of the Golden Bear at last year’s Berlinale, a Golden Globe and numerous other honours, the movie was seen as the front-runner for the foreign language Oscar. The film focuses on a couple going through a divorce and a custody battle. It touches on traditions and constraints against women in Iran.

It was the second Iranian film to be nominated for an Oscar, but the first to win. The other Iranian movie to be nominated for the award was 1997's "Children of Heaven," which lost to Italy's "Life Is Beautiful."

The other nominees were Michael R. Roskam's “Bullhead” (Belgium), Philippe Falardeau's “Monsieur Lazhar" (Canada), Joseph Cedar's "Footnote" (Israel) and Agnieszka Holland's "In Darkness" (Poland).

In another first for the Oscar's, Jean Dujardin, 39, became the first French actor to win an Oscar for best actor for his role in the silent film “The Artist”. Dujardin has already won Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for the same role.

The film’s creator, Michel Hazanavicius, won best director for “The Artist”. He was competing against Alexander Payne's “The Descendants”, Martin Scorsese's 3-D picture “Hugo”, Woody Allen’s "Midnight In Paris" and Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life”.

“The Artist” has won four nominations, including costume design and original score. Martin Scorsese's 3-D picture “Hugo” got 11 nominations and has taken five awards for cinematography, art direction, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.

Woody Allen won the original Screenplay Oscar for "Midnight In Paris" and Alexander Payne took an Academy award for his Adapted Screenplay of "The Descendants".

Meryl Streep won the Academy Award for best actress for her role in “The Iron Lady.” She has been nominated 17 times but she’s won only three Oscars, and the last time was 29 years ago for lead actress in “Sophie’s Choice.”

The award ceremony is being held at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood (formerly known as the Kodak Theatre) in California.
